Adults over 50

Why I Work with Maturing Adults

I have enjoyed working with adults over 50 and people entering later phases of life since my training. During my early years of practice, I learned how the complex interplay between mental, physical, and existential factors is for aging adults.  I now know from firsthand experience how life after 50 brings lots of changes that can be refreshing or bittersweet, as well as challenging, and at times painful. These feelings can arise with major life shifts like children moving out of the home, job or income loss, serious health issues, and deaths of loved ones

Major Life Events over Age 50

I work with clients entering mid and later phases of life to help them through short-term mental health challenges and long-standing struggles. Some of the key life decisions and life transitions I help my clients with include:

· Finding an alternative to a long-standing career that is no longer fulfilling

· Job loss or unexpected early retirement

· Dealing with an “empty nest” with children going to college

· Loss of a loved one or social isolation

· Struggling with making a positive health change

. Dealing with serious illness or chronic disease

- Dealing with post-divorce emotions

Navigating Major Life Transitions

Some of these life events prompt the question of “What do I do now?” or “What’s next?” I help people navigate difficulties most of us will eventually face. Using cognitive behavioral approaches and other proven methods, I help people learn coping skills and how to identify actions within one’s control to improve their situation. I strive to help clients find a centered sense of calm in difficult circumstances and support behaviors and decisions that increase life satisfaction and fulfillment.

Recent Onset of Anxiety and Depression

Even people with no history of mental health issues can find that aging brings on anxious or saddening thoughts they've never had before about their past or future. Some people struggle with a sense of identity and life purpose with the increasing awareness of their approaching mortality. It's not uncommon to pick one's head up and suddenly worry about where life is headed or how to deal with an unexpected serious health issue or job loss.
